Embracing Self-Love: A Journey of Emotional Healing Through Yoga and Writing

Embracing the power of movement, I discovered a pathway to channel my emotions through physical activities such as lifting, boxing, dancing, and notably, yoga. For years, I gravitated towards intense workouts, mistakenly equating physical exertion with emotional relief.

I existed in a world of extremes – extreme pain, extreme indulgence, extreme escapism – all while my heart remained shielded and my emotional wounds unaddressed. It took a decade of self-deception before I truly reconnected with my body.

Among all the physical activities, yoga was the one that resonated with my inner self the most. It was the practice I found myself returning to since its inception in my life in 2001. Over the years, yoga transformed into a sanctuary, a space where I could reconnect with myself on a profound level. Yoga taught me to observe my emotions without judgment and to sit with my pain without the urge to flee from it. It was in this space of acceptance and surrender that I found healing. I can now say I found emotional healing through yoga.

Writing entered my life as an extension of talk therapy. My therapist introduced me to a simple yet powerful exercise: to explore a feeling and ask myself, “What is this about?”. I felt like a tightly sealed coconut, and the pen was the tool that was ready to crack me open. This practice, coupled with yoga, helped me understand how I could allow pain to flow through me, address it, let my tears cleanse me, and find solace in nature. My writing style has evolved to connecting movement with words thanks to the guidance of a good friend of mine, Molly R. Finotti, who hosts an intentional practice of capturing your emotions in journals after a short session of movement. After all our emotions live in our bodies.

It took years to finally comprehend that life unfolds in the present moment. Opening your heart sets you on a journey of blossoming. Being open might seem daunting, but the rewards are worth it. Release and surrender are powerful teachers. Surrender to your feelings, accept what is, let it be. Allow the pain to pass through your body, then address it, handle it, let your tears cleanse you, and find a place of comfort.

The moment you walk through life with openness, integrity, and authenticity, you welcome the purest form of LOVE. This openness might trigger your ego, warning you of potential hurt, but the rewards of LOVE far outweigh your fears. Once you release the chains of expectations, acknowledge your ego but choose to ignore it, and choose to love yourself unconditionally, you can spread love, radiate hope, and inspire belief in others. This is where true healing lies. Perfection is an illusion. What truly matters are the choices we make and the daily practice of leading from the heart and listening to your body and soul. There is emotional healing through yoga and writing.
